He Knows My Name - Nathaniel
I know your Future
43 The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.
44 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.
46 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!
48 Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.
49 Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.
50 Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.
51 And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
God knows who and what you are
I want to suggest to you today
He knows Who you are…
He knows What you are…
And He knows Where you are…
Do you see the theme these past few weeks?
He knows the Who … The What … and the Where …
It is Interwoven in our messages…
The answer to who we are rests in Genesis 1:27 “God created man in his own image, in the image of God created He him.”
Man was created in the image of God.
It’s like an artist drawing a picture while looking in a mirror.
Paul in Romans 8:39 said, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord,
There is a Challenge to us to conform to the image of God.
Satan wants us to conform to his image but we are created in the image of God.
One Psalm writer talked about who we are: “We are men created a little lower than the angels.”
What we are can be summed up by Jeremiah as clay.
Jeremiah 18:4 “And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.”
Clay is constantly being reshaped/remolded in the potter’s hand.
The answer to God knowing where we are takes its roots in Genesis 3:9…
And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
Adam walked when it was Cool
He walked in the Evening…
He would stroll with God…
But the question God asked Adam was Rhetorical!
God knows where you have been/are at all times.
That can be a very scary thought.
This concept of God knowing Who, What, Where… Clearly seen in John 1.
John 1:1-5 Introduces us to Jesus.
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
John 1:1 - Since the Beginning, Jesus was with God and was God.
Jesus - Life/Light of the world.
John came to bear witness of the light…He came to tell people A LIGHT WAS COMING!
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
Jesus was the light that shines in the darkness.
John 1:8-14 We see Jesus’ purpose to reach whosoever would follow him.
8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
John 1:35-42 paints the picture of Simon and Andrew leaving John the Baptist, the forerunner of Christ to follow Jesus the Messiah.
There are good people following God without full revelation.
They are following things that are leading them to the Light.
John 1:43 The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.
Jesus is calling some of you today.
When Jesus found Philip…He went and told Nathaniel
Verse 45 – Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.
Between verses 45 & 46 Nathaniel is startled to hear that the Messiah has been found in Nazareth.
Nathaniel is from the same town of Cana in Galilee where Jesus would perform His first miracle.
Nathanael was very familiar with Jesus’ hometown Nazareth.
Nathanael knew that Nazareth, much like Cana was a rough town, unrefined, uneducated, uncultured, full of evil, populated with sinful people, and so Nathanael asked in verse 46….
Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.
If Nathanael would have known…
God can open up a bakery with only enough cornmeal to feed a dying mother and her son…
Jesus could feed 5,000 plus with a family pack fish meal…
Jesus could turn water into wine…
GOD specializes in turning nothing into something…
He specializes in turning small into great…
Little into big…
Down and out into up and coming…
Poor into rich…
Lame into whole… Deaf into hearing…
God specializes in turning nothing into something.
Paul said in I Corinthians 1:27 “God takes pleasure in using the common, weak, and lowly things of this world to confound the wise and powerful.”
Can anything Good . . . Philip said, “Come and See”
Verse 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!
Jesus is saying, “Nathanael, I know your heart.”
Guile means cunning of slyness.
Jesus is saying, “Nathanael, you are a straight shooter.”
I know your heart…
Somebody here today - Jesus is saying, “I know your heart…”
David was a man after God’s own heart. Why? Because he was perfect?
No! Because he made mistakes but yet he loved God…
He failed God but he loved God.
Verse 48 Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.
Jesus is saying, “I know your location.”
He was under the Fig tree…A big fig tree is good for shade…
It is a hot time…The pressure is on.
Some are under the fig tree.
It could be a hideout place….
What are you hiding from today?
Place of privacy…
I don’t want anybody to know what I am doing.
Nathanael is amazed in verse 49 Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.
To which Jesus responded in verses 50-51 Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these. And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
Jesus is not only saying I know where you are but he is saying…I know your future…
Where have you been hiding? - Jesus knows…
What have you been hiding? Jesus knows…
Why have you been trying to carry the load by yourself…Jesus said, Come unto me…
Philip told Nathanael, “Come and see…”
