Don’t Miss The Party
Revelation 19:6-9 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. 7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. 8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. 9 And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.
I love to go to a party.
I love hanging out and having fun.
Many people think dancing is a sin. - the way the world does it maybe it is.
But dancing is not actually a sin.
I think I can prove that biblically we serve a God who also likes to party.
The first mention of dance in the Bible is in the book of Exodus when Miriam, sister of Moses, took a tambourine and led the women of Israel into a dance after witnessing the parting of the Red Sea. They expressed joy and celebration in their dance after witnessing God's great miracle on their behalf.
Psalm 149:3 Let them praise his name in the dance:
Actually dancing did not become related to something bad when Tertullian and Saint Augustine, dance incited idolatry, lust and damnation through dance.
If you are somewhat new to christianity or you are a christian who has yet to read more of the Bible it should excite you that we serve a God who loves to have lots of food, delights in parties and people celebrating from all backgrounds.
In fact the first meeting of the first church started at a giant party.
It was a time where everyone would bring the first fruits of the harvest and have a giant feast and party!
What a great time!
We read in Revelation this brief mention of something we call the “Marriage supper of the Lamb.”
In a very elementary description of what this is, it is the moment that we are reunited with Christ and have one giant feast to celebrate the moment.
The church is reunited with Christ and we celebrate at the wedding reception and Christ and his bride (the church) are reunited.
This sounds like to me it will be a great moment of joy and celebration.
There will be trumpets sounding, music will be going, there will be dancing, there will be singing and some sort of amazing dinner!
I am ready for this party.
The best part of the party is that all of us are invited.
1. DON’T MISS THE PARTY BECAUSE YOU DON’T LIKE THE GUEST LIST
John 15:11-32 (NLT) To illustrate the point further, Jesus told them this story: “A man had two sons. 12 The younger son told his father, ‘I want my share of your estate now before you die.’ So his father agreed to divide his wealth between his sons. 13 “A few days later this younger son packed all his belongings and moved to a distant land, and there he wasted all his money in wild living. 14 About the time his money ran out, a great famine swept over the land, and he began to starve. 15 He persuaded a local farmer to hire him, and the man sent him into his fields to feed the pigs. 16 The young man became so hungry that even the pods he was feeding the pigs looked good to him. But no one gave him anything. 17 “When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, ‘At home even the hired servants have food enough to spare, and here I am dying of hunger! 18 I will go home to my father and say, “Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, 19 and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired servant.”’20 “So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. 21 His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son.’ 22 “But his father said to the servants, ‘Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet. 23 And kill the calf we have been fattening. We must celebrate with a feast, 24 for this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.’ So the party began. 25 “Meanwhile, the older son was in the fields working. When he returned home, he heard music and dancing in the house, 26 and he asked one of the servants what was going on. 27 ‘Your brother is back,’ he was told, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf. We are celebrating because of his safe return.’ 28 “The older brother was angry and wouldn’t go in. His father came out and begged him, 29 but he replied, ‘All these years I’ve slaved for you and never once refused to do a single thing you told me to. And in all that time you never gave me even one young goat for a feast with my friends. 30 Yet when this son of yours comes back after squandering your money on prostitutes, you celebrate by killing the fattened calf! 31 “His father said to him, ‘Look, dear son, you have always stayed by me, and everything I have is yours. 32 We had to celebrate this happy day. For your brother was dead and has come back to life! He was lost, but now he is found!’”
I say all this to say, don’t miss the party because you don’t like the guest list.
Working with people often times the question is “who’s going to be there.”
He was angry at what he didn’t get
He became so focused on himself
“I never got a party”
Anyone remember testimony service
Anyone else get angry that you didn’t have a miserable life?
He was angry what his brother did get (Grace)
You can’t get mad at the grace of God
(HOLD UP BIBLE) Do you know what this book is?
It’s a story of grace and hope and love
It also is sharper than any 2 edged sword
There is a story about a man by the name of Peter 1. Peter cuts off mans ear as he arrests Jesus
Peter in the name of defending Jesus takes out his sword and cuts the mans ear off
We need to be careful that in the name of defending Jesus we don’t take our sword and cut off peoples ears.
Your friends and family that do not know Jesus don’t need your sermon or your answers, they want to see Love.
They need to see the grace and love and joy of Jesus
We don’t defend Jesus, he defends us.
Grace is not an exclusive club for the righteous.
It’s an open invite for every person
His brother had returned.
Luke 15:7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.
When someone returns home (the church turns around).
Our response is to be celebrating them
Our response is to shout with them
To go dance with them
To eat with them
We are to be inclusive
We don’t get to decide the guest list of heaven!
The guest list is determined by one thing - Are you human?
Jesus came to save ALL that are far off
He died for all of humanity
That includes you
2. DON’T MISS THE PARTY BECAUSE YOU DON’T THINK YOU BELONG
Luke 15:20 “So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him."
His father was waiting for him
God is waiting on you
Sometimes we lose our way and think God is sitting judging us
Just waiting to hurt us
It’s the opposite - he is waiting for us.
He is ready to bring you back into the family!
Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
While you were out smoking and drinking - Christ died for you
While you were going too far in that relationship - Christ died for you
When you forgot God - He died for you
When you sinned against him - He died for you
When you turned your back on him - He died for you
When you said something you shouldn’t have - He died for
Jesus didn’t die for the perfect people - he died for me and you
Jesus died for people who will curse him
He died for people who will attack him
Jesus died for me
21 His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son.
He repented to both his father and God
Some of us do pretty good at repenting to God but not the people right in front of us.
Matthew 5:23-24 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; 24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
Sometimes you might have to have some difficult conversations and just admit your fault in some things
In just about every situation there is some level of responsibility that I can take
In most scenarios there is some level of responsibility I can take.
Most people don’t get very far in life because they focus on “They”
“They” may have done things but God wants to do something in “YOU” not in “they”
You can’t heal when you hide from the truth
When you blame shift you can’t own it because you have shifted the situation to someone else
If you have never been baptized...
What can stand in your way?
We have everything for you
Clothes, towels, someone to baptize you
Today could be a day of new beginnings for you
A time for you to lay down your old life and let old ways pass away and let old things become new
2 Corinthians 5:17 If any man be in Christ he is a new creation, old things are passed away, behold all things become new
There is nothing you can do that God can’t forgive.
Romans 12 says there is no condemnation of those who are in Christ Jesus
The reason we preach baptism so much at the Potter’s House is not just because it’s a box to check off in your relationship with Jesus but it’s an opportunity for you to declare that old things are gone and I am going to become a new creation.
It’s you making the decision to get out a pen, write on the RSVP and mail it back to heaven and let heaven know, “I’m attending the party”
For some of you today is the day to decide that it’s time for me to attend the party.
The invitation is yours to respond to
We want you at this party!
You don’t have to dress up
Come with your doubts, fears, insecurities, worries, shame,
addictions - whatever - Just come to Jesus
Whatever your issue - YOU ARE STILL INVITED and we would love to celebrate with you making that decision today!
3. DON’T ATTEND THE PARTY ALONE
Luke 14:15-23 And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
16 Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:
17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.
18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.
19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.
20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.
21 So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.
22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.
23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.“
The Kingdom of God isn’t a closed club
Are you breathing - let’s go to church
It doesn’t matter what you think is wrong with you - just come to Jesus
We should be sending invites every moment we get
Keep finding more people
BE A BRINGER - we have the greatest message in the whole world - let’s compel people to come to Jesus
As we get ready to enter into a time of prayer and worship I want to encourage you if you haven’t been baptize you need to make a decision to be baptized.
If you haven’t repented - told God you are ready to follow Him - today is your day.
The invitation is yours today
Each of us are guilty since we all have sinful tendencies
Maybe you are not on the vip list…
Jesus died so we can become apart of that list
When Jesus died the veil was torn
Share the gospel - none of us should be wearing white but we will be…because of Jesus.
Let’s accept his invitation this morning
